ABOUT THE SHOW

Written in the ‘30s, set in the ’20s, Bertolt Brecht’s epic gangster play was conceived to warn America about the preciousness of democracy.

Through powerful, transparent allegory, Brecht shows us the path of an ordinary grifter, as he rises from obscurity to the pinnacle of power.

"THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI" Bertolt Brecht's rarely tackled gangster play,  opened at Marblehead's Little Theatre on September 27.

The production is a testament to the power of live theatre and the potential of community theatre to tell important stories and tell in the most impactful way.

"THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI" seems an ordinary tale about grocers and grifters and cauliflower and vegetables.

But it is an epic tale, birthed in dangerous times, that deals with the most important questions that a society can face.

In this darkest of comedies, Brecht lays bare the fragility of the democratic system, reminding all that it is so easily threatened by those who are not afraid to upend societal conventions, subvert the justice system, and corruptly use the threat of violence and actual violence to bring a people to their knees in front of an all-powerful tyrant.

At the end of the evening, audiences may think that "THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI" is “ripped from the headlines.”

"But that is the core of Brecht's ironic messages," says the show's Producer/Director Mancusi-Ungaro. "He was 'ripping from' headlines that are now almost one hundred years old. And similar headlines have been written many times since then..."

Brecht intended "THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI" to function as a warning to America about the fragility of democracy.

Brecht begs us to look around our world and take notice.

He implores us to stand up and fight back.

To resist.

Before it is too late.

Before we lose that which is most precious.

Are we equal to the task?

This satire is a dark commentary of the perils of unchecked power. (supplied by MLT)

ABOUT MARBLEHEAD LITTLE THEATRE

The spark of inspiration that was to become MARBLEHEAD LITTLE THEATRE (MLT) started in 1955 by members of the drama committee of the Marblehead Woman’s Club. The group led by visionary Terry Hale ignited the imagination of actors and directors in and around Marblehead to tackle bigger and better things. Six decades later, it has proven to be one of the oldest community theatre groups in New England as well as one of the few to have continually produced shows each year. MARBLEHEAD LITTLE THEATRE is a registered 501c.3 not for profit corporation led by an all-volunteer board of directors. MLT relies on the greater community for support both financially and with actors, directors and production staff.
